For a whole weekend, discover the magnificent city of Lyon, taste its incredible specialities, visit the superb Christmas market and take part in the breathtaking sound and light shows taking place all over the city, all the while protecting our planet!
The history of the Festival of Lights
In 1850, the religious authorities launched a competition for the creation of a statue, intended as a religious signal at the top of Fourvière hill. On December 8, the day of the statue’s inauguration, bad weather thwarted the festivities, and the religious authorities were on the verge of canceling the inauguration. Finally, the skies cleared and the people of Lyon spontaneously arranged candles in their windows, and by nightfall the entire city was illuminated. The religious authorities followed suit, and the Fourvière chapel appeared in the night.
That evening, a veritable festival was born!
Every year now, on December 8, the people of Lyon place luminous lights in their windows and stroll through the streets of the city to admire the exceptional light installations.
